VINTAGE REPORT

The vintage ended on the 17th of April 2009 and in the old world tradition our Wine Maker, Herb Friedli, decked the vineyard signage with the autumn vines.

End of Harvest - Sign with Vines

What started as a perfect season with good fruit set and a hot dry summer on Waiheke, turned cold and wet in late February. Syrah Fermentation 2007 We were happy that our crop levels
had been thinned at veraison to help the vines ripen the remaining fruit.

The harvest started on March 8th with our second Chardonnay vintage, and the last of the Syrah came in on 17th April. The wild yeast ferments are filling our winery with rich spicy fruit aroma and a promise of excellent finished wines.

The team moved directly into harvesting olives and we have an excellent yield, averaging 14%, of our traditional golden green olive oil.

Cuvée Eve - Chardonnay 2008 En Primeur
Cuvée Eve
Our 1st vintage of Chardonnay, named Cuvée Eve in honor of Eve Bollard, who with her husband John was the inspiration for Oakura Bay Vineyard. Eve had a particular interest in the Chardonnay that was grafted onto their Cabernet vines in 2006. This wine we dedicate to her memory.

The Chardonnay was fermented on wild yeast and allowed to age in French oak barrels for 15 months. There is good fruit character and a balance of acid that gives a full but focused flavour spectrum on the palate.
